Description
The Douglas DC-3 is one of the greatest aircraft in history. Many are still flying today in private use, in the freight configuration and on the air show circuit. The DC-3's first flight was on December 17, 1935. During World War ll, the DC-3 underwent modifications to become the legendary C-47. General Eisenhower counted the C-47 among the chief Allied assets that won the war. Douglas originally had planned a production run of 100 aircraft, but from 1935 to 1947 over 10,000 aircraft of all variants had been built. The first DC-3 that entered service with American Airlines was on June 25, 1936. This reproduction American Airlines DC-3 is based on registration number NC21798. This aircraft began life with American in November, 1940 as a standard 21 passenger airliner. In April of 1942, American changed the registration number to N21798. It flew under American Airlines colors until 1948 when it then went through multiple sales with various owners until it was finally preserved in May,1999 in the original American Airlines colors. It now resides at the CR Smith American Airlines Museum located at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
